Trevor Leo Cup:

This week’s clash with New Norfolk in the Seniors will see both sides competing for the Trevor Leo Cup, as the current holders of the Cup Hobart will be looking to retain the cup.

I was fortunate enough to meet Trevor Leo earlier in the year at the 1959 reunion and we discussed his career so I will provide an overview for those who aren’t familiar with his decorated career.

Trevor Leo had a distinguished career as a player with Hobart coming from Cooee in 1954, and played a lot of football under our most successful coach Mal Pascoe. Trevor started his own coaching career under his pupillage taking on the helm for Macalburn (Hobart’s Under 19s side) in 1958. Trevor left Hobart due to a transfer in his employment as a teacher. He moved to Launceston for the season in 1962 as captain-coach.

Upon his return to the south of the state in 1963, Trevor wanted a senior coaching position and with the incredibly successful Mal Pascoe at the helm for the Tigers he had to look elsewhere for opportunity. Trevor’s words were that Hobart were happy to give him a clearance, largely because of the fact that New Norfolk was languishing towards the bottom of the TFL. He went on to coach New Norfolk’s inaugural TFL Premiership in 1968, before retiring from playing. He continued as a non-playing coach for the 1969 season. After a spell in retirement from coaching he returned to the Tigers to coach for the 1974 season.

An incredible record for a footballer Trevor played in Premierships with Hobart in 1954, 1959, 1960, as well as coaching the New Norfolk premiership in 1968. He won the Hobart Best & Fairest award in 1957 and 1960, taking out the William Leitch medal (TFL B&F) in 1957. He represented Tasmania and extraordinary 18 times as a player.

Trevor played a total of 124 Games with Hobart, with a further 75 at New Norfolk. His time at New Norfolk saw him take the club that finished bottom winning just one game. It was sure to be a challenge, however in his first season he took New Norfolk to second. Unfortunately for him the Eagles lost the Preliminary Final to his old side Hobart by just one point at North Hobart Oval. Hobart would go on to be the Premiers defeating Sandy Bay the following week. In 1964, the Eagles were minor premiers before losing the Grand Final, and this continued with narrow preliminary finals losses in 1965 and 1966. It wasn’t until 1968 that Leo finally got that elusive TFL Premiership as a coach.

Trevor describes teaching at New Town High School before heading to Boyer Oval to take New Norfolk’s training. The greatest player he coached was Peter Hudson, whom he used to tutor with his maths after training. Peter of course famously went on to play 129 games, kicking 727 goals at Hawthorn. He is an including in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, and both the Hawthorn and Tasmanian Teams of the Century.

I asked Trevor what it was like coming up against his old club Hobart the first time, and he described sharking the tap from Denis Powell at the first bounce and setting up a goal. Apparently he promptly received a ‘blow to the ear’ from Powell who told him not to do that again. The next play he called for a handball from Hobart centre half back Alan Appleton, who hearing the familiar voice call promptly handballed too him.

Trevor has been recognised as a legend of Tasmanian Football and both clubs recognise this by playing for the Trevor Leo Cup once each year.

1999 Reunion

Well it was great to see some familiar faces to celebrate 20 years since Hobart’s 1999 SFL Premiership. A huge thankyou to all involved in the day and a special thanks to Scott Quinn for organising.

Master Rules:

Another tough game for the Hobart Masters (Pigskins) this time at the TCA against Lindisfarne Blues.

The Pigskins were off to a great start in the first quarter, with four goals straight! The Return of former coach Heath Walker along with Jeremy Lawrence made a deadly force in the forward line kicking goals.

But unfortunately into the second Lindisfarne got the upper hand and took control of the game. but not without the Pigskins still putting up a fight with our coach Chris Jordan working the ball out of the backline multiple times. Tim Luttrell in the middle who fought and played well all game and Wade Chatterton making sure those water bottles were always full! In the end, it was a hard game but well fought.

Final Score:
Lindisfarne: 15.10 – 100
Hobart Master’s: 5.2 – 32

Training Update:
Location and Time have changed for training, from now on will be at the TCA oval Thursday nights. 5:30pm.

Hobart Masters Pigskins new team jumpers are before the league for approval, the new design will still have a bit of “pig” about them but will take on a more traditional HFC colour and logo.

Also we are on the hunt for options for our end of season trip. If you have a shack or property available for accommodation please let us know.

Tiger Talk (21/6/19)

A couple of weeks off have been rejuvenating for our men’s teams. Whilst Finals look off the cards for the Seniors there’s plenty of improvement left in this group and we’ll be looking to take some positives from the season still. The Reserves sit percentage outside the top five, currently in seventh and will be looking to pick their early season form back up and have a crack at the finals. Meanwhile the Under 19s will be hopeful of welcoming a number of ‘young stars’ back from injury and look like they can be very competitive come finals time.

The Women’s side has the bye this week, so they’ll be looking to next week’s clash with Kingborough. The girls showed plenty of fight in last week’s clash with cross-town rivals North Hobart, which might not be reflected in the final score. But the good signs were there. Best players were Molly Browning, Danielle Woolley, Emma Warn, Fiona Langford, Leah Smith, and Annie Wong.

This Sunday will see the TCA Ground hosting the Master Rules gala days, there are games at 10.30am, 12pm and 1.30pm. We encourage you to get along and support our Master Rules side, the Pigskin Warriors take on the Lindisfarne Blues at 12pm.

Best of luck to all our sides playing tomorrow, and welcome to everyone who is present for the 1999 Premiership Reunion. We hope you have a great day at the TCA! Eat ‘em alive you Tigers!

Tiger Talk (6/6/19)

The Week Gone:

Well, another tough week for the club on field with results not going our way. Thursday Night saw Senior Coach Mark Beck announce that he was stepping down from the role on mutual agreement with the club. The full statement can be viewed here. The club thanks Mark for his passion and service to the club across many years both as a player and coach.

The Weekend kicked off with the Women Tigers taking on the Lindisfarne Lady Blues, and the girls battled hard defensively but went down to the Lady Blues 19.13 (127) to no score. The Tiger’s best were Ashton McHenry, Fiona Langford, Mikayla Batchelor, Molly Browning, Tamika Shingler and Abbey Browning. While we are on the Women’s side a big congratulations to Fiona Langford who has been selected to represent the SFLW side in this weekend’s representative game. Best of luck to Fiona and the rest of the SFLW.

The Reserves looked in the hunt early but were largely outclassed by a strong Lindisfarne side. Notable mentions included Mark Beck who pulled on the boots again following stepping down from his coaching role, and he played well earning himself the first mention. Josh Young was good, with Shaun Gray’s pressure worth a mention too. The other best players were Bidgood, Daly and Stone for the Tigers with Lindisfarne running out 19.17 (131) winners to Hobart’s 4.3 (27). It was great to see the recognition for Mark Beck with a guard of honour following the Reserves game and plenty of applause to acknowledge his efforts!

The Seniors started well with a couple of early goals giving us the lead briefly, Lindisfarne however kicked eight in a row meanwhile the Tigers kept kicking behinds late in the first and during the second quarter. The third quarter wasn’t the greatest however the Tigers fought out the last quarter strongly to show some signs. Ben Mabon hardly missed a hit out all game, with the Tigers best comprising of Goninon, Lynd, Azzopardi, Awde, Pulford and Mabon.

Finally, the Colts had the ‘Twilight Game’, the third and first half of the last quarter saw the Tigers giving it a real shake kicking a few goals whilst holding a strong Lindisfarne. With about 15 minutes to go the Tigers looked an outside chance before Lindisfarne kicked away. The Tigers Best were Shaun Clark, Jye King, Tom Beswick, Jason McDonald, Tom Gamble and Will Golding.

Tiger Talk (5/6/19)

This Week

This round sees us taking on Huonville at home in all four grades – so firstly good luck to all our Tiger sides. Last week was an interesting day with the Under 19s kicking off the day with a big win over New Norfolk. Hobart managed to share the workload with seven individual goal kickers led by Kieren Wright with five. Best players were B. Daniels, J. Pearce, T. Raspin, T. Gamble, K. Wright, H. Reinbach. A pretty strong effort from a side who only had 15 players available on the day, with the 70 point victory moving the Tiger Cubs into third by two games.

The Reserves clash with New Norfolk shaped up as an important one for our finals aspirations and the lads didn’t disappoint. The Tigers were energetic early and kicked away to a 2 goal lead at quarter time. With a fair period of Hobart on top the boys were able to hold off New Norfolk and slow the game up each time they got on top. A 5 goal kin was a good result. A few noteable mentions for the Tigers were Josh Webster who kicked four, with Justin Harvey providing a solid target up forward.

Finally for the day. The Senior game, a disappointing start for the Tigers in the first half meant the guys weren’t really in the hunt. Beaten on the scoreboard and physically, Hobart lifted and showed some important fight. Some great efforts of individual courage led to us having half a bench, but despite this we held New Norfolk somewhat going down 4 goals to 1 for the second half. This would have been an easy time to give up and the fight showed especially from the younger players was great to see. Great to see Alex Beswick back in the Seniors and Chris Thongnoppakun looked at home back in the Seniors (a few years after his debut).

The Women didn’t play until Sunday, and they showed some real signs of improvement. It was the first time the women have played against Kingborough since they joined the competition early in the season. With our girls being more than competitive. Some good signs now, ahead of the SFLW competition being split into two groups based on ladder position. The girls showed signs that they can keep on improving and manage a few more wins. The Tigers best were M.Browning, F.Langford, M.Batchelor, A.McHenry, A.Browning and K.Smith.

Importantly the club has a number of functions coming up which I’d urge you all to support. This includes the Black & Gold Ball the club’s night of nights and of course the all-important 100 club.
