From the President
As it is getting close to the end of the year, I thought I would take the time to wish you all a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
2019 has been a tough year for the club and its supporters. As 2020 beckons, I can feel some improvements in the air.
Recently the club held its Annual General Meeting and I am very happy to say that I will be continuing as your President into the 2020 and 2021 seasons. I learnt a great deal in the season just gone and I will build on those learnings into next season and beyond. Thank you everyone for your support during the year and I hope I can count on that support again as I move into a second year.
A lot of that support I am talking about came from the board this year, we had to make a few tough calls but we managed to get through relatively unscathed. It’s a tough gig being on the board but I am proud of the way we transitioned from one President to the next. 2020 will see some new (old) faces on the board. A huge welcome to them, I cannot wait to get started on next year.
Obviously everyone would be aware by now the club has signed Alex Gilmour as our Senior Coach for the next two seasons and he has hit the ground running with training and getting to know the players. It’s a really exciting appointment for the club and I am looking forward to seeing what Alex brings to the playing group.
There will be more news on this as it comes to hand but you can expect different things from the club next season. Obviously on field it has already started but off field also. The board are working on some exciting initiatives to bring to the club and improve our off field performance.
I am thinking along the lines of “Same Club – Different Ideas” and we can use your help.
So enjoy your break, I’m off to Queensland for a few weeks over Christmas and New Year and I am really looking forward to it. Summer seems to have forgotten us here at the moment.
Stay safe, look after yourselves and I’ll see you in 2020

Club Workshop (Strategic Plan 2019-2023)
Parents, committee, sponsors, players, coaches and anyone involved with our great club
Monday 18 November 2019- 6.15–9.00pm at clubrooms
Running a grassroots community club, the size of ours can be challenging and put pressure on the volunteers who do the lion’s share of the work. We can risk volunteer burnout, which can ultimately lead to a lowering of our standards – in professionalism, performance, revenue, and all the things we have come to love about our club.
To support our volunteers and help our club run better, we invite everyone involved with the club, past and present, to attend this important planning workshop.
It is an opportunity to take our club to the next level and secure its on and off-field sustainability by creating a strategic plan and getting everyone to contribute to building a strong future for the club.
This engaging interactive 2.5 to 3-hour session is for all members of our senior and junior clubs. It covers 5 key areas:
- HEALTH ASSESSMENT – TDS health check – analysing 10 key areas of the club – identifying gaps and opportunities, succession planning & more
- REVENUE GENERATION – Identifying 30 New revenue initiatives that should generate the Club $70-$100k New revenue in Year 1
- FINANCIAL REPORTING – Simplified reporting structure (3 x 1 pages) to ensure tracking of financial health is maintained
- VOLUNTEERS – Opportunities to have the Federal Government to fund some people to work for our club at NO cost.
- COMMITTEE STRUCTURE – walking through the importance of having the right committee structure going forward.
- PLUS! A STRATEGIC PLAN ON 4 PAGES covering 5 short-term operational pillars (12 months) and 5 key long-term strategic pillars (3-5 years). The workshop session provides a simple roadmap for the committee to follow.
Please make the time to participate in this important session!

The Hobart Football Club is pleased to announce the appointments of Former AFL Richmond Draftee and Tassie Devils player, Alex Gilmour (Pictured Right) as the Club’s Senior Playing Coach for the next two years. He will be supported by the appointment of Senior Assistant Playing Coach Brad Joseph (previous Richmond OSFC Captain – Pictured Left). Both players are very experienced Tasmanian State League players, who will greatly boost the ranks and strength of the Tigers, as well as attracting other ‘A-Graders’ to the Club, as we look to turn around our on-field fortunes in 2020.
Alex Gilmour has coached Richmond in the Old Scholars for the last five years, taking them to four Grand Finals and two Premierships in that time. Gilmour kicked 100 goals for the 2019 season, including a 20 goal haul against St Virgils in Round 11.
Brad Joseph is a strong utility player, kicking multiple goals on a number of occasions in 2019, and was very instrumental in Richmond’s path to this year’s Grand Final. Brad will be strong support to Alex in his assistant coaching role as well as providing much added strength and ability to Hobart’s line-up for 2020.

The 2019 Colts Team
The Colts didn’t make it through the Preliminary Final hurdle a couple of weeks ago unfortunately, but it was an exciting contest against the Southern Storm. The loss of Tyler Raspin in the first half proved to be a big hurdle for the side.
After the Tigers had a small lead at Quarter Time they couldn’t keep the foot on against a fancied Southern Storm outfit. The Tigers best were Brock Daniels, Kyle Buck, Jye King, Angus Evans, Tom Styles and Mark Cripps. The skill and effort was there on the day, the boys just couldn’t quite get the job done. We’re all very proud of their season and look forward to the future of these young Tigers!
Full Result – U19s Preliminary Final
Hobart 1.2 2.3 2.5 5.5 (35)
Southern Storm 0.2 5.3 8.6 11.8 (74)
Goals: S. Stubbs 2, K. Buck, T. Styles, and M. Cripps.
Best: B. Daniels, K. Buck, J. King, A. Evans, T. Styles, M.Cripps.
This Week’s Footy
Our Under 19s team this week squares off in what shapes as a fierce Preliminary Final against the Southern Storm. This time in the contest we will throw our best 22 at them. Two weeks ago we put in a below-par performance. Unfortunately, we only had 18 players available in our qualifying final loss against them.
Last week against Sorell it was all about responding to the previous week’s performance. In what we knew would be a tough physical contest, our desire to win and get back to playing our brand of footy really shined through. Standout performances on the day were Tyler Raspin playing his best game for the year in the ruck and giving us first use out of the centre, our skipper Shaun Clark was a brick wall in the backline. Meanwhile, Angus Evans and Brock Daniels were dominant around the stoppages. Our semi-final win was a tough finals game where everyone played their role. We’ve had a long injury list so these guys that have been coming back over the last few weeks will only be better for the hit out and this week we will embrace the underdog tag and promise to throw everything at the storm in order to gain a grand final berth.
Eat ‘em alive you Tigers. Thanks to our supporters who made it to Dodges Ferry on the weekend and we encourage you to head along tomorrow to support your football club! Across the board – we’ve had a tough season as a club. We are all extremely proud of our Colts side, well done to the guys on getting this far, and we all firmly believe that you are capable of playing off in the big dance!
See you tomorrow! (Saturday 7 September 2019) – 9.30am at North Hobart Oval

Finals Footy is Here!
It’s that time of the year, footy finals!
Tomorrow shapes to be a big day down at Cygnet for the club.
Unfortunately the Seniors and Womens seasons concluded last weekend, however that’s not the end of our season.
Tomorrow sees the Under 19s (Colts) take on Southern Storm. The underage side is fresh off a solid win over Dodges Ferry. The Qualifiying Final will be a tough contest, a win would see the Tigers progress to the 2nd Semi to play for a spot in the Grand Final. We know the boys can do it, with an upset win over Southern Storm taking place in Round 17.
The Reserves are in for a dog fight in the elimination final against Brighton, with a week off. Their round 15 clash against the Robins saw a Tigers win by 13 points. But the Robins gave us a lesson earlier in the year. Best of luck to both sides, please get along and support the Tigers! ‘Eat em Alive!!!
This Week’s Games:
- Colts: Southern Storm v Hobart – Qualifying Final (Cygnet) – 10:15am.
- Reserves: Brighton v Hobart – Elimination Final (Cygnet) – 12:20pm.
Save the Date – 2019 Best & Fairest
Saturday 5th October 2019 – more to come!
I’ve already discussed last week’s game from the Colts, which was a great result. Mark Cripps led the goalkickers with three, but with 9 goalkickers it was a great team effort.
The Women had an exciting finish to their season at Boyer Oval taking on the New Norfolk Eagles. The Girls had a slow start but controlled the game for the first three quarters before kicking four goals in the last quarter to get a 41 point win! Fiona Langford was best on ground with three majors.
